Staff and Mentors

Using a developed curricula, the Young Journalists Mentors help grow writers, and through their writing helps grow readers. It emphasizes reading to support writing and writing to support reading. Reading, be it through research or absorbing other journalists writings, and each other’s writings, supports further writing. The Program meets 29 of the Language Arts Florida Standards (LAFS) for grade five. Below you will find all our mentors and a little bit about them!

Cyrena Sky

Executive Director and Mentor

Cyrena is a woman of many talents. With a Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communication from the University of South Florida, she has taken on the role of Executive Director at just 22-years-old. In 2019 she was an anchor / producer / reporter for Florida Focus WUSF, which is the 11th largest television market in the US. She is continuing her education by getting her masters in 6-12 education in hopes of teaching Television Productions while continuing her position with The Young Journalist.

Thomas Hardy

Board Chair and Mentor

Prior to locating to Vero Beach, FL., Thomas Hardy was president of a software company in Massachusetts where he was recognized for pioneering automated production management systems for high speed “web offset” printing presses. He is a member of the National Press Club, Washington, D.C., The Society of Professional Journalists, LION Publishers (Local Independent Online News) and a Charter Member of the Columbia Journalism Review.
